One in 100 people are on the Autistic Spectrum and across the UK there are around 700,00 autistic adults and children.

Here at the Peter Pan Centre we support children both with queries of or a diagnosis of Autism.

Each child is unique and has their own strengths and challenges. We work every day to provide early support and help them to build towards their full potential. Celebrating each child for exactly who they are.

Many people with Autism find social interaction and communication challenging. At the Centre we provide lots of attention grabbing activities. Benefits of these are:

  • Promoting interaction
  • Building anticipation
  • Encouraging eye contact
  • Engaging in new experiences
  • Encourages children to be together
  • Exciting and highly motivating
  • Good for promoting communication

Many autistic people experience difficulties with interpreting both verbal and non-verbal language. Some have limited speech whilst others have good language skills but have difficulties understanding tone of voice or sarcasm. No one person is the same and just because a child has limited language skills does not mean they have nothing to say.

We support children in developing their communication and understanding across all of our sessions, using a variety of approaches:

  • Intensive interaction and attention grabbing activities.
  • Highly motivating activities based on a child’s interests
  • Songs, stories and rhymes
  • Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) where a child can exchange a symbol to make a request.
  • Clear and simple speech by our specialist practitioners, supported with visual aids such as Makaton signs, photographs or objects of reference
  • Now and Next boards and visual timetables to help with transitions between activities and within the routine.
  • Allowing children extra time in order to process language and sounds.
  • ‘Listening’ to children’s body language, facial expressions, sounds and gestures.
